After breaking 5 gourds, you will be forced to enter a route and in First Games, this will always be the True route. Gourds are one of the key elements to the story progression. You can also focus on character events and upgrades or on increasing your national power and income, but you can find yourself without the characters you need to defeat the game if you wait around too long without conquering other factions. The speed of your conquest doesn't matter so much. Story events can also cause enemy countries declare war on you. To attack another house, you will need to declare war on another house before attacking. There are events designed to force you into war with other houses if you remain at peace for far too long.
